About this journey

Aigio station sits on the outskirts of the city, 2 kilometres from the town centre, at the western end of the line's currently operating section. The Hellenic Train Class 560 — a Stadler GTW 2/6 diesel multiple unit, built in 2003 — departs eastbound along the northern Peloponnese coast toward the Gulf of Corinth, running without overhead wires: electrification of this section was still being installed at the time of filming.

The line opened on 22 June 2020, replacing a metre-gauge railway whose regional services across the Peloponnese were suspended indefinitely in December 2010. The new alignment is standard gauge, and the infrastructure is designed for speeds of up to 200 km/h, though the diesel GTW units are limited to up to 120 km/h on this section. Shortly after departure, the route passes through the Trapeza Tunnel at 2,760 m and the Platanos Tunnel at 2,200 m, with the A8 Athens–Patras motorway crossing overhead between them. Diakopto, roughly midway, is the junction for the narrow-gauge rack railway toward Kalavryta. Beyond Diakopto, views of the Bay of Corinth open to the north, with the mountains of the Greek mainland visible across the water.

After the smaller stops of Akrata, Lygia, Lykoporia, and Xylokastro, the line curves inland through the 1,815 m Melissiou Tunnel before reaching Diminio and finally Kiato. Kiato station, which opened on 9 July 2007 as the western terminus of the electrified line from Athens, lies 1 km west of the town near the A8 motorway. Here passengers change to electric trains for the onward journey to Athens and Piraeus — a transfer that the ongoing electrification work is intended to eliminate.
