About this journey

The journey begins at the western end of Lisbon, at the stop serving Cemitério da Ajuda, and follows Carris tram line 18E eastward toward the riverside parish of Misericórdia. Carris has operated this route across the city's historic quarters for well over a century, and the remodelado car — a type rebuilt in 1995 from bodywork dating to 1936 — is one of the enduring fixtures of Lisbon's surviving street-tram network.

Misericórdia is a parish whose transport history runs unusually deep. The Bica Funicular, also operated by Carris, first opened on 28 June 1892 under a concession granted in 1888 to the Nova Companhia dos Ascensores de Lisboa, with the project conceived by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard. It rises on an 11.8% incline over 245 metres using a counterbalanced cable system, and was electrified between 1914 and 1916. Nearby, Cais do Sodré railway station — whose Art Deco design was completed by architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro and inaugurated on 18 August 1928 — serves today as an intermodal hub connecting metro, suburban rail toward Cascais, and Transtejo ferry services across the Tagus. The station was classified as a Monumento de Interesse Público on 30 January 2012. The tram route thus connects Lisbon's quieter western outskirts to one of its most layered and historically significant riverside terminals.
