About this journey

Andermatt station sits at the heart of the Swiss Alps, a junction where the Schöllenenbahn branch meets the metre-gauge line of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn — the railway that has operated this network since 2003, absorbing the former Furka Oberalp Bahn. From Andermatt the route climbs toward the Oberalp Pass, a crossing that closes to road traffic in winter; when it does, the railway takes over entirely, running car shuttle trains through to Sedrun while the Glacier Express continues its year-round service between Zermatt and St. Moritz along the same tracks.

The line descends from the pass into the upper Rhine valley, passing through the stations of Mumpé Tujetsch, Segnas, and Acla da Fontauna within the Disentis/Mustér municipality before reaching the terminus. Disentis/Mustér station itself sits at the point where the MGB route from Brig ends and the Rhaetian Railway's line toward Chur begins — a transfer point between two distinct narrow-gauge networks. Above the valley, Disentis Abbey marks the skyline; the monastery traces its origins to around 720 AD, though the large complex visible today was built between 1696 and 1712. The municipality is predominantly Romansh-speaking, a linguistic character that sets this arrival point apart from the German-speaking Alpine villages the journey leaves behind.
