Bar to Bijelo Polje Cab Ride
Watch on YouTubeAbout this journey
Bar station stands at the southern end of the Пруга Београд–Бар, one of the most engineered railway lines in the former Yugoslav world. The decision to build it was made in 1952 as a national project of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and construction took 25 years before the line opened on 28 May 1976. It was considered the most important railway construction project after the Second World War and the most expensive infrastructure project of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.
The 476.59 km line is standard gauge and electrified throughout with 25 kV, 50 Hz AC. To cross the three Dinaric mountain ranges between the Adriatic coast and the Serbian interior, engineers drove 254 tunnels with a combined length of 114,435 m and threw more than 435 bridges across ravines and rivers. The most celebrated of those structures is the Mala Rijeka Viaduct, 498 m long and standing 198 m above the ground. On the Montenegrin section the maximum permitted speed is up to 80 km/h. The locomotive hauling this journey, a ŽPCG 461 built by Electroputere, belongs to the JŽ series 461 that has long been associated with this corridor. Bijelo Polje station, the northern end of this recording, is the last station in Montenegro for trains continuing toward Belgrade.
