About this journey

Bregenz station sits on the southeastern shore of Lake Constance, the western terminus of a route that follows the Arlberg Railway the full length of Vorarlberg and Tyrol. Commissioned in 1883, the Arlberg Railway connected this corner of Austria to the rest of the country and remains the principal rail corridor across the western Alps. The Railjet calls at St. Anton am Arlberg, Landeck-Zams, Imst-Pitztal, and Ötztal before descending toward the Tyrolean capital.

Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof, opened in 1853, serves as the junction of the Arlberg Railway with the Brenner Railway toward Italy and the Mittenwald Railway toward Germany. The station was completely destroyed by Allied bombings by the end of World War II and rebuilt in the functional style of the 1950s; a further reconstruction began in 2001, and the current building opened on 19 May 2004, designed by architects Riegler Riewe. In 2019 the station recorded 315 train movements and 38,500 passengers daily. The journey thus moves from Austria's westernmost lakeside edge, through the high Alpine crossings of the Arlberg, to one of the country's most significant railway junctions.
