About this journey

Davos Platz station sits at the junction of two Rhaetian Railway lines: the Landquart–Davos Platz line that arrives from the north, and the Davos Platz–Filisur railway that continues south. The line from Landquart owes its existence to Willem Jan Holsboer, a Dutch hotelier who proposed a railway connection to Davos in 1888, convinced it would bring more visitors than horse-drawn carriages. He originally planned a standard-gauge route but switched to metre gauge when the mountainous terrain made standard construction too costly. The first section opened to Klosters in 1889, with the complete line to Davos Platz following on 21 July 1890. By 1895, Holsboer had renamed his company the Rhaetian Railway — Rhätische Bahn, RhB — to reflect ambitions for a wider network.

North of Klosters Platz, the line reaches its steepest gradient of 4.5%, negotiating two horseshoe turns through curved tunnels: the 402 m Klosters curved tunnel and the 334 m Cavadürli curved tunnel. The journey then descends toward the Rhine valley, passing through the 984 m Chlus Tunnel, opened in 1963 to bypass a narrow ravine. The route reaches Thusis station, a junction of the Albula and Landquart–Thusis lines whose renovated building was inaugurated in 1995, concluding a run that spans steep alpine climbing, curved mountain tunnels, and the gentler lower valley.
