Disentis/Mustér station sits beneath an overall canopy at the point where the Rhaetian Railway hands over to the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn, making it the eastern terminus of the MGB network. The town itself stands at the convergence of the Oberalp and Lukmanier pass roads, and Disentis Abbey — founded around 720, with its present monastery complex built between 1696 and 1712 — dominates the valley behind the platforms. Disentis is also one of the most important centres of the Romansh Sursilvan dialect, a cultural character that marks this corner of Graubünden.

From Disentis/Mustér the metre-gauge line climbs westward through the municipality's smaller stations — Acla da Fontauna, Segnas, and Mumpé Tujetsch — before ascending toward the Oberalp Pass. The Glacier Express between Zermatt and St. Moritz uses the same corridor several times a day. At Andermatt, the route reaches a junction that once belonged to the Furka Oberalp Bahn; since 2003 the station and its lines have been owned and operated by the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. A branch, the Schöllenenbahn, leaves here for Göschenen at the northern portal of the Gotthard Rail Tunnel, and in winter, car shuttle trains serve Sedrun while the Oberalp pass road is closed. The journey moves from a Romansh valley town steeped in monastic history to one of the Alps' most connected mountain junctions.
