Graz Hauptbahnhof, the most frequented railway station in Austria outside Vienna, stands as a point of departure shaped by successive reconstructions. The first station here opened in 1847; a larger replacement was built between 1871 and 1876, only for that building to be totally destroyed in Allied bombing raids in 1945. The current station was completed in 1956, and since 2010 it has been further adapted as an international transport hub, with rebuilt platforms and a new subsurface tram stop connecting all four city tram lines directly to the main entrance. The station's role is set to grow further when the under-construction Koralm Railway provides a direct link from Graz to Italy via Klagenfurt.

The RailJet departs southwest, leaving behind Graz's historic centre — added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999 — and tracks through Styria toward Carinthia. The route follows the Southern Railway corridor, which links Graz northward to Vienna and southward toward Slovenia. At the journey's end, Villach Hauptbahnhof serves as a significant junction where the Southern Railway meets the Tauern Railway toward Salzburg. The station's twelve tracks, four of them sidings, reflect its role as an interchange for both domestic services and international EuroNight trains connecting to destinations including Munich, Venice, and beyond.
