About this journey

Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof, opened in 1853, stands at the meeting point of five major Alpine rail corridors, among them the Arlberg Railway to Bregenz, commissioned in 1883, and the Brenner Railway running south into Italy. In 2019 the station recorded 315 train movements and 38,500 passengers daily, a figure that reflects the enormous transit pressure this valley floor carries. An Innsbruck goods-train bypass tunnel, the Inntaltunnel, was completed in 1994 to draw freight away from the main station complex, and the Lower Inn Valley Railway east of the city is currently being rebuilt as a four-track line as part of the TEN Berlin–Palermo axis, handling up to 430 trains a day.

At Wörgl the route divides, the eastern branch continuing via Zell am See — the Gisela Railway — toward Salzburg, Graz, and Klagenfurt. The ÖBB Class 1016 Siemens Taurus works this corridor across the Central Eastern Alps to Schwarzach. That station, set in the Salzach valley between the Hohe Tauern range to the south and the Salzburg Slate Alps to the north, became a significant junction with the opening of the Tauern Railway onward to Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia. The journey moves from a dense, historically layered urban hub to a valley terminus framed by high Alpine terrain.
