Killwangen-Spreitenbach station stands at a notable rail junction in the canton of Aargau, where the Heitersberg Tunnel route diverges from the older line via Baden. It also serves the neighbouring municipality of Spreitenbach, and carries a freight-only connection to the Wettingen–Effretikon railway line. From here, the Limmattal light rail — route 20, operated by AVA — heads east through the Limmat Valley aboard a Stadler Tramlink.

The line opened in December 2022, making it one of the newer additions to the greater Zürich rail network. Running through the Limmat Valley region, it links communities that have long sat along one of Switzerland's most travelled rail corridors. Just west of the destination, the line connects to the Zürich tram network at Farbhof before arriving at Zürich Altstetten.

Bahnhof Altstetten station has deep historical roots: the first station on the site was built in 1847 as part of the Swiss Northern Railway's Zürich–Baden line, among Switzerland's earliest railways. It became a junction in 1864 when the line to Zug via Affoltern am Albis opened, and Swiss Federal Railways opened a workshop nearby in 1907. Today the light rail terminates at its own dedicated platforms across the station plaza from the S-Bahn platforms — a modern endpoint grafted onto nearly two centuries of railway history.
