About this journey

The journey begins at Latour-de-Carol–Enveitg station, one of the few terminals in the world where three different gauges converge: 1,435 mm standard gauge toward Toulouse, 1,668 mm Iberian gauge toward Barcelona, and the 1,000 mm metre gauge of the Ligne de Cerdagne. Each line also operates on a different voltage, with the Cerdagne line drawing 850 volts DC from a third rail, powered by hydro-electric stations on the River Têt.

The Ligne de Cerdagne — known as the Train Jaune, or Yellow Train, after its yellow-and-red livery derived from the colours of the Catalan flag — is 63 kilometres long in its entirety. Construction began in 1903, and the full extension to Latour-de-Carol was completed in 1927. Along the route, the line crosses two structures classified as Historic Monuments: the Pont Séjourné, a 236.70-metre masonry viaduct at kilometre 18.002 in Fontpédrouse, and the Pont Gisclard at kilometre 24.422, a 253-metre suspension bridge and the only one of its kind on an operating railway in France. In 2023, a major project replaced 12 of the Pont Gisclard's suspension cables. The line reaches its highest point at Bolquère-Eyne, the highest railway station in France at 1,593 metres, before descending through the Têt valley toward the endpoint at Olette.
