About this journey

The journey departs from Linz Urfahr station on the north bank of the Danube, the starting point of the Linz Urfahr – Aigen-Schlägl line, a rural route through Upper Austria served by ÖBB Class 5047 diesel railcars. Linz Urfahr is a distinct station from the main Linz Hauptbahnhof, which lies to the south of the river.

The Class 5047 fleet has operated services like this one for decades. ÖBB placed the original order for six railcars with Jenbacher Werke in 1983, based on the German 627 series design, and the first units entered service in 1987. Eventually a total of 100 were built for ÖBB, replacing older rolling stock some of which dated to the interwar period. Each unit is powered by a 12-cylinder engine producing 419 kW (570 hp), with the entire drive system located underfloor, and can be operated in one-man mode, allowing the driver to also sell tickets. From 2004, a number of units received a new red and grey livery along with reupholstered blue seats. The line itself has at times tested the fleet — a 5047 struck a rock on the Mühlkreisbahn in April 2022, underscoring the demanding character of these Upper Austrian routes. The journey ends at Aigen-Schlägl, the terminus deep in the Upper Austrian countryside.
