Maglaj to Sarajevo Cab Ride
Watch on YouTubeAbout this journey
Maglaj station sits along the Bosna river corridor, the starting point of a journey that traces one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's principal rail arteries south toward the capital. The line has deep historical roots: a narrow-gauge Bosna railway built between 1879 and 1882 under Austro-Hungarian rule first connected this corridor, running on 760 mm gauge. That predecessor was replaced in 1947 by the current standard-gauge line, which caused the immediate closure of the old narrow-gauge section from Doboj to Zenica that same year. Today the corridor is operated jointly by ŽFBH and ŽRS, and the line is partly double-track and electrified, with infrastructure rated for speeds of up to 70 km/h.
The journey passes through Zenica before the line continues south toward Sarajevo. At the terminus, Sarajevo main station carries its own layered history: first opened in 1882 to serve the original narrow-gauge railway, its infrastructure was damaged during the 1992–1995 war and subsequently rebuilt. In 2016 the station building and its forecourt square were declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina — the square itself is named after the victims of the Srebrenica genocide. The station stands approximately 3 km from the city's downtown area, near the Marijin Dvor district, a calm arrival point after a journey that spans more than a century of Bosnian railway history.
