About this journey

The journey begins at München Hauptbahnhof, which opened at its current site in 1849 and serves as a terminal station with 32 mainline platforms. From there, the train takes line 5550 through the underground run to München Ost before joining line 5510, the Munich–Rosenheim railway, heading southeast.

The Munich–Rosenheim railway was opened on 15 October 1871, built to relieve the older Mangfall Valley Railway, which could no longer absorb growing traffic toward Austria. The route via Grafing was chosen in part because it was ten kilometres shorter than the Mangfall Valley line and offered a more gradual gradient, reducing the risk of wheel-slip on steam-hauled trains. Construction was authorised on 16 May 1868, funded by four million guilders provided by the Bavarian government. The line was later doubled in stages between 1892 and 1 May 1894. Between München Ost and Grafing, the right-of-way runs alongside the tracks of Munich S-Bahn line S4. The line also forms part of TEN-T line 1, the corridor linking Paris with Bratislava and Budapest.

The journey ends at Rosenheim station, a Category 2 hub where routes toward Salzburg, Kufstein and Innsbruck, and Mühldorf converge — a contrast to the single-destination terminal at Munich where the cab ride began.
