About this journey

Ogulin station sits at the edge of the Ogulinsko Polje, a karst valley some 320 metres above sea level and covering 60 km², the fifth largest of its kind in Croatia. From here the M202 line — part of the historic Budapest–Rijeka corridor opened in 1873 — carries the journey northwest toward Karlovac, while the unelectrified M604 Lika railway branches away southward, the only operating rail link between continental Croatia and Dalmatia. Ogulin also marks the electrification boundary on this corridor: Zagreb–Split trains swap their electric locomotive for a diesel here before continuing south.

Karlovac, the destination, lies 130 km northeast of Rijeka and 56 km southwest of Zagreb, positioned where the M202 connects those two cities. The city's relationship with the railway is layered: the construction of the Zidani Most–Zagreb–Sisak line in 1861 ended its era as a major trade and transport centre, and yet it is precisely the M202 that now defines its connectivity. The journey from Ogulin thus moves between two distinct railway geographies — the upland junction where electrification ends and multiple lines diverge, and the lower, more settled corridor that brings the train into Karlovac station.
