About this journey

The journey begins at Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, which first connected the region to the European rail network in 1860 via the Bavarian Maximilian's Railway from Munich. Today the station is also home to the Salzburger Lokalbahn, whose services have run from here since 1886, making it one of the longer-standing local rail operations in Austria. Since 1996, that line's city terminus has sat in an underground station beneath Südtiroler Platz, directly adjacent to the main station.

The line northward to Lamprechtshausen is operated not by ÖBB but by Salzburg AG, a regional company that runs the standard-gauge Salzburg–Lamprechtshausen railway at 1,435 mm gauge alongside the connecting Bürmoos–Ostermiething branch. Salzburg AG also holds the narrow-gauge Pinzgauer Lokalbahn in its portfolio, illustrating the breadth of its regional operations. The ET40/50 railcar — a joint product of SGP and Siemens — carries the journey northward through the flat terrain of the Salzburg basin, covering a route that links the state capital with the small market town of Lamprechtshausen, a contrast in scale that quietly defines the line's character as a genuine local railway connecting the urban core to the quieter communities of the surrounding plain.
