Trieste to Udine Cab Ride
Watch on YouTubeAbout this journey
Trieste Centrale station sits close to the port at the foot of the Karst plateau, a terminus with nine tracks and five platforms whose Neo-Renaissance building was inaugurated on 19 June 1878 to a design by Wilhelm von Flattich, replacing the more modest original structure that Carl Ritter von Ghega had placed on reclaimed land. The journey north and west follows one of the oldest rail corridors in the region: the Udine–Trieste railway opened in 1860 under the Austrian Empire, which built it to connect Vienna with the Kingdom of Lombardy–Venetia. After Veneto's annexation to the Kingdom of Italy in 1866, the line briefly became an international railway, with Cormons serving as the border crossing. The entire route is double track and electrified at 3,000 Volts DC, classified by RFI as a primary line, with track-doubling on its central sections completed as recently as 1988 and 1990.
At Monfalcone the line joins the Venice–Trieste railway, the two routes sharing track for the final approach to Trieste in one direction and onward to Udine in the other. Udine station, which opened on 21 July 1860, is a junction of five lines — to Venice, Trieste, Tarvisio, Cervignano, and Cividale — and has functioned as the principal rail node of Friuli-Venezia Giulia since the first trains arrived. The ride moves between two stations defined by their imperial origins and their continuing role as crossroads of north-east Italy.
