About this journey

Županja station sits at the eastern edge of a town long shaped by the Sava river, which marks the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina here and is crossed by a bridge linking the town to the Bosnian settlement of Orašje. From this branch-line terminus — reached by a local railroad from Vinkovci rather than a main trunk route — the journey heads northeast through the flat Slavonian corridor, where the A3 motorway runs parallel to the north.

The landscape carries deep historical layers. Županja itself was under Ottoman rule as part of the Sanjak of Syrmia from 1536 to 1687, and the broader region of Slavonia and Syrmia remained under Ottoman control until the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699 transferred it to the Habsburg monarchy. The Sava frontier was subsequently organized as a Military Frontier governed directly from Vienna, a status that persisted until 1881 when the territory was finally annexed to Croatia-Slavonia. The journey ends at Osijek station, situated on Lavoslav Ružička Square in the centre of the city — a civic arrival point that contrasts with the quiet, river-marked departure at Županja.
