About this journey

The journey begins at Balatonfüred on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, where Line 29 connects the Balaton region toward the main corridor into the capital. From Szabadbattyán the route joins Line 30, the Budapest-Déli–Murakeresztúr line, which carries trains northward through Transdanubia toward Budapest.

Budapest-Déli station, the terminus of this journey, sits in the 1st District on the Buda side of the city and primarily serves towns and cities in Transdanubia — making it the natural end point for a train arriving from the Balaton. The station first opened in 1861 on the line toward Rijeka, then known as Fiume, as part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire's route to the Adriatic. Heavy damage during the Second World War left the building largely rebuilt, and its modern façade was completed in 1975 — making it the only modern exterior among Budapest's major rail terminals. Beneath the station, the M2 metro line's western terminus has operated since 1972, connecting arriving rail passengers directly into the city's rapid-transit network. Déli is a pure terminus, with twelve tracks and seven platforms, all of which dead-end within the station. Plans for a cross-city tunnel linking Déli with Budapest-Nyugati would one day alter that character entirely, though the project remains unrealised.
