About this journey

Győr station, opened on 24 December 1855, sits on the principal Vienna–Budapest main line and handles Railjet, EuroCity, and international overnight services alongside regional trains. From this busy interchange, MÁV line 10 branches away southward toward Celldömölk — a single-track, non-electrified route of 70.5 kilometres running through western Hungary.

The line has its origins in March 1867, when Hungarian Minister of Public Works and Transport Imre Mikó proposed a 25-line national railway network that included a connection between Győr and Graz. The section linking Győr and Szombathely via Celldömölk was opened on 1 October 1871 by the Hungarian Western Railway, built to bind Austria and Hungary more closely together. On 1 January 1889 the line passed to the Hungarian State Railways. Electrification has since been proposed but not carried out, and the route remains unmodernised single track today.

Along the way the line reaches Pápa, where it intersects with the Pápa–Csorna and Tatabánya–Pápa railway lines, making it a point of connection for the wider regional network. The journey ends at Celldömölk station, itself a junction where MÁV line 10 meets the Székesfehérvár–Szombathely railway line — a quiet but strategically placed terminus that contrasts with the international bustle of Győr where the ride began.
