About this journey

Bohumín station stands at one of the Czech Republic's most historically significant railway crossings, where lines from Silesia converge before heading south into Moravia. The station sits on the route of the former Košice–Bohumín Railway, a private company established in 1869 in Austria-Hungary, whose first section from Bohumín to Český Těšín was completed on 5 May 1869. Nationalised in 1924 and absorbed into the Czechoslovak State Railways, this corridor became one of the principal freight and passenger arteries linking the industrial north-east of the country with central Europe.

From Bohumín the journey follows railway line 271 south toward Přerov, where it joins line 270 continuing to Česká Třebová. The entire corridor is electrified at 3,000 V DC, the standard system on Czech lines north and east of Praha, though a conversion programme to 25 kV 50 Hz AC — covering this route — is planned to run between 2025 and 2040. Since 1 January 2025, the European Train Control System has been in exclusive operation along the Česká Třebová – Olomouc – Přerov segment, making this one of the first corridors in the Czech Republic to operate fully under ETCS. The ČD 151 Škoda locomotive hauls through key intermediate points including Olomouc hlavní nádraží and Zábřeh na Moravě.

The journey ends at Česká Třebová station, a major junction with 8 platforms, opened on 20 June 1845 and designed by architect Anton Jüngling. Electrified in 1957 and rebuilt across two significant phases — 1901–1909 and again 1972–1979 — the station is the subject of a further modernisation estimated at EUR 789 million, with completion expected by 2031. The ride moves from the industrial borderlands of Silesia through Moravian lowlands to one of the country's most storied railway hubs.
