About this journey

Chambéry – Challes-les-Eaux station sits at the foot of the Alps in Savoie, where international services — TGV, Eurostar, and Frecciarossa — converge before the mountains close in. From here the journey follows the ligne de Culoz à Modane (frontière), commonly known as the Maurienne line, southeast toward the Franco-Italian border.

The line's destination gives a measure of the engineering ambition behind it. Modane station opened on 17 September 1871, the same year that the Fréjus Rail Tunnel — bored between 1857 and 1871 — achieved the first breakthrough of the Alps by rail. That opening transformed Modane almost overnight: following the completion of the Mont-Cenis rail tunnel in 1871, the town became a border city and a critical transit point between France and Italy. The Fort du Replaton, built in 1885 to command the tunnel entrance, stands as a reminder of how strategically the crossing was regarded in the decades that followed.

The line reaches Modane deep in the Maurienne Valley, enclosed by the Vanoise Massif to the north and the Massif du Mont-Cenis to the south. Just beyond the station, the track executes a 180° loop before entering the Fréjus tunnel, where an electrical and signalling disconnection marks the border with Italy. The journey from a busy interchange station to this Alpine threshold traces one of France's most historically charged rail corridors.
