About this journey

Erdut station sits in the Novi Erdut hamlet, about 1 km south of the village, at the eastern edge of Croatia where the Drava and Danube rivers define the border with Serbia. The area carries a weight of recent history: Erdut gave its name to the 1995 Erdut Agreement, which initiated the UNTAES transitional administration over Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Syrmia following the Croatian War of Independence, and the region only returned fully to Croatian control in 1998.

From Erdut the route heads west toward Osijek along flat, fertile ground — the municipality is entirely level terrain with the characteristic black soil of eastern Slavonia. The line passes through Dalj, where it connects with the R104 serving Vukovar to the south and the crossing toward Subotica to the east, before continuing on the R202. That railway, running non-electrified and mostly single-tracked across 249.839 km between Varaždin and Dalj, carries the train the final stretch into the city. Osijek station, located on Lavoslav Ružička Square in the city centre, is the principal railway station in Osijek and one of the larger stations in Croatia, and serves as a junction for lines toward Budapest, Strizivojna-Vrpolje, and Vinkovci. The journey moves from a quiet border halt steeped in the aftermath of conflict to one of Croatia's more significant regional railway hubs.
