Zagreb Glavni kolodvor station, situated 1 km south of the city's main square, is the largest station and principal hub of the Croatian Railways network. Its Neoclassical reception building stretches 186.5 m in length, with allegorical sculptures by Hungarian sculptor Vilim Marschenko above the main entrance. The station's origins trace to legislation passed by the Croatian-Hungarian Parliament on 15 January 1890 and confirmed by Emperor Franz Joseph I on 31 March 1890, with the City of Zagreb donating approximately 25 hectares of land for the complex. That same construction programme established a direct railway connection toward Karlovac, the route this cab ride follows.

Expansion continued through the decades: in 1936 the station gained covered platforms, underground passenger passages, and a Siemens & Halske electromechanical interlocking system for centralised traffic control. By 2006 it was recording 27,325,000 passengers annually, the highest figure in its history, and around 312 passenger trains served it each day as of 2012. The HŽPP 2044 locomotive departs this historic terminus south-west toward Karlovac Detour, carrying that long operational tradition out through the Zagreb approaches and into the landscape of inland Croatia.
