About this journey

Hromec halt sits at the Croatian side of the Slovenian border, a stop that only returned to the timetable in 2014 when cross-border passenger services to Rogatec were reinstated. From here the train takes the non-electrified, single-track R106, a line whose Zabok–Krapina section first opened in 1886 and whose final cross-border reach to Rogatec was completed in 1930. The Đurmanec–Rogatec stretch fell out of use between 1991 and 2014 before being revitalised, and the Zabok–Krapina section itself underwent a major reconstruction between 2023 and 2024, renewing the entire upper rail structure. Diesel multiple units of the HŽ series 7121 have worked this corridor exclusively since the mid-1990s.

At Zabok the route transfers to the electrified R201 corridor toward Zaprešić, a connection that since 2021 has carried the great majority of Zagreb-bound passengers, leaving Hromec without direct trains to the capital. The journey ends at Zagreb Glavni kolodvor, a Neoclassical station designed by Hungarian architect Ferenc Pfaff and opened on 18 August 1892, its 186.5 m reception building financed by the Hungarian State Railways following an 1890 government act. The contrast is marked: a quiet reinstated border halt on a freshly rebuilt 19th-century branch, arriving at one of the region's most architecturally distinguished termini.
