About this journey

The journey begins at Zagreb Glavni kolodvor, a Neoclassical terminus whose 186.5-metre reception building was designed by Hungarian architect Ferenc Pfaff and opened on 18 August 1892. Construction had been authorised by the Croatian-Hungarian Parliament on 15 January 1890 and confirmed by Emperor Franz Joseph I on 31 March 1890, with the project financed by Hungarian State Railways.

Leaving Zagreb, the route runs west along the M101 corridor to Zaprešić, then turns north on R201 toward Zabok, where it joins the R106 — a non-electrified, single-track line running 27.19 km from Zabok to the Slovenian border near Rogatec. The Zabok–Krapina section of this line first opened in 1886; the continuation to Rogatec followed in 1930. Between 2023 and 2024 the Zabok–Krapina section underwent major reconstruction, including full renewal of the rail structure. The final stretch beyond Krapina, closed between 1991 and 2014, was restored alongside the reintroduction of cross-border passenger services. Passenger workings on this section have been operated by diesel multiple units since the mid-1990s, primarily the HŽ series 7121. The journey ends at Hromec, a halt just short of the Slovenian border, where the Croatian service meets connecting trains from Rogatec — a quiet frontier stop at the end of a line that reaches back to the final years of the nineteenth century.
