Fulpmes station sits at 936 metres in the Stubaital, the upper terminus of the Stubaitalbahn — a metre-gauge railway operated by IVB that threads down through the valley to Innsbruck. The town has long been the centre of iron production in the Stubaital area, and the line that serves it connects this working alpine community to the Tyrolean capital below.

The Stubaitalbahn descends from Fulpmes toward Innsbruck, where the city lies at the junction of the Inn valley and the Wipp Valley. The surrounding peaks frame the route throughout: the Karwendel Alps rise to 2,334 metres to the north of Innsbruck, while Serles, at 2,718 metres, stands to the south above the valley the line has just traversed. Innsbruck hosted the Winter Olympics in both 1964 and 1976, and the alpine character those games celebrated remains visible across the entire journey. The railway arrives at a dedicated public transport hub in the forecourt of Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof — a interchange that took its current form when the rebuilt station opened on 19 May 2004. The contrast between the quiet, elevated valley terminal at Fulpmes and the busy urban hub at Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof captures the Stubaitalbahn's role as a direct link between high-altitude Tyrol and one of the Alps' principal cities.
