About this journey

Landquart station sits at the junction of two Rhaetian Railway lines: the route toward Davos Platz to the northeast and the line toward Thusis to the south. Both diverge from the same platform throat, where RhB metre-gauge tracks share the station with SBB standard-gauge services. It was in 1896 that the Rhaetian Railway first opened its narrow-gauge line between Landquart and Thusis, with the initial 13.68 kilometres running parallel to the already-established standard-gauge corridor into Chur.

That shared corridor leads south to Chur station, which first opened on 30 June 1858 as the terminus of the Rheineck–Chur railway and has since grown into the most important railway junction in Graubünden. The Rhaetian Railway was directed by the Swiss Federal Council to integrate into the existing station rather than build its own, a decision that shaped the dual-gauge character Chur retains today. A comprehensive redevelopment, begun in 2000 as a joint project of SBB, the Rhaetian Railway, and the town of Chur, unified the station's infrastructure while raising platform heights to 55 cm. From Chur, the network fans outward: the Glacier Express and Bernina Express both call here, and the Chur–Arosa line departs from the station forecourt on grooved tram rails through the city streets.
