About this journey

Lenzburg's Seetal platform sits across the street from the main station, physically separated from the main-line tracks — an arrangement that already hints at the Seetal line's singular character. Although it is a standard-gauge SBB line, the Seetal line retains some characteristics of a roadside tramway, threading south through the canton of Aargau and into the canton of Lucerne, passing intermediate stops that include Ermensee before descending toward the city. The line carries the Lucerne S-Bahn S9, which runs a half-hourly service between Lenzburg and Lucerne. A former branch once diverged toward Wildegg, using Lenzburg Stadt as its hub, but that line was closed in 1984 and subsequently dismantled.

Lucerne station, where the journey ends, stands in a city-centre and waterfront location on the south side of Lake Lucerne. Railway history runs deep here: the first station opened in 1856 at the end of the Schweizerische Centralbahn main line from Olten and Basel, a successor building designed by Hans Wilhelm Auer followed in 1896, and a fire on 5 February 1971 destroyed that structure entirely. The current station opened on 5 February 1991, its concourse designed by Santiago Calatrava. The contrast between the Seetal line's unhurried, tramway-like approach and the scale of this terminus makes the arrival quietly striking.
