Ljubljana railway station, completed on 18 April 1848, stands at the starting point of a line with deep roots in the Austro-Hungarian era. The route north to Jesenice opened in 1870 as part of the Rudolfsbahn network, threading the Sava valley toward the Karawanks mountain range that marks Slovenia's border with Austria. In 1884 a financial crisis forced nationalisation, and the line passed to the Imperial Royal Austrian State Railways.

The surviving Ljubljana–Jesenice section runs 64.5 km on single track electrified at 3 kV DC, with only a short stretch near Ljubljana carrying two tracks. The SŽ Class 541 Taurus hauls both national services along this corridor and international trains that continue beyond Jesenice to Villach and Vienna. Jesenice station became a significant junction in 1906 when the Bohinj Railway toward Trieste and the Karawanks Railway through the tunnel to Villach both opened there. The cross-border section onward to Tarvisio, once part of the original Rudolfsbahn, closed in stages in 1967 and 1969, and the tracks were removed in the 1980s. The present station building at Jesenice, a modernist structure faced in white marble, was rebuilt between 1953 and 1955 to replace the one destroyed by Allied air raids in early 1945 — a contrast in timescales that the line itself embodies, running from a mid-nineteenth-century imperial railway to a mid-twentieth-century industrial frontier town.
