Ljubljana railway station, whose main building was completed on 18 April 1848, stands as the departure point for this cross-border run to the Adriatic. The station predated the Austrian Southern Railway — the Vienna–Trieste trunk route that placed Ljubljana at the heart of imperial rail geography — and is currently undergoing a major expansion costing around 167 million euros, with completion planned for 2026.

From Ljubljana the line follows the historic corridor through Pivka, the junction where the Vienna–Ljubljana route diverged toward Rijeka. That alignment was fully operational by 25 June 1873, when Rijeka station opened to serve both this approach and the line coming from Budapest via Zagreb. The Rijeka–Pivka section carries a further layer of infrastructure history: after World War One, Italy's Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane electrified it with a 3,000 V DC system, a legacy that shaped the traction requirements of trains on this corridor for generations. The SŽ Class 342 and HŽ Class 1141 locomotives operating this service reflect that cross-border engineering history.

Rijeka station itself is a landmark terminus: its neoclassical building, 150 m long with a single-storey arcaded facade, was built between 1889 and 1891 to designs by Budapest architect Ferenc Pfaff and today sits under a preservation order. The station stands close to the port that grew into the main commercial port of the Kingdom of Hungary following the Croatian–Hungarian Settlement of 1868 — giving the railway's coastal endpoint a significance that extends well beyond the platform edge.
