About this journey

Divača station, opened in 1857 on the main Ljubljana–Trieste railway line, marks the starting point of one of Slovenia's most distinctly purposeful routes. From this junction the Divača–Koper Railway descends approximately 50 kilometres toward the Adriatic coast, threading through intermediate stations including Hrpelje-Kozina, Presnica, Črnotiče, and Hrastovlje before reaching the coast.

The line carries a dual character: regional passenger services share the track with heavy freight trains serving the port of Koper, making it one of the more operationally intensive routes in the Slovenian network. That intensity has driven the construction of a shorter replacement alignment — reducing the route from 44 km to 27 km through several tunnels — slated to open in 2026, which gives this footage a documentary quality, recording the existing railway before the newer corridor takes over. At the coastal end, Koper station dates from 1979, built from the outset as a combined rail and bus facility. The journey moves from a nineteenth-century mainline junction inland to a purpose-built transport interchange on the edge of the Adriatic, a contrast in railway eras compressed into a single descent.
