About this journey

The journey begins at Ljubljana station, the main railway hub of Slovenia, which has served the capital's city centre since its completion on 18 April 1848 — predating the Austrian Southern Railway connection that would soon follow. A major renovation of the station, begun in autumn 2024 and costing around 167 million euros partly co-financed by European funds, aims to deliver a renewed underpass, rearranged tracks, and covered platforms by 2026, though the station seen in this September 2022 footage predates those works.

From Ljubljana, the SŽ Class 713 — known locally as the kanarček — works south and east along the Državna meja–Metlika–Ljubljana line toward Metlika. The route passes through the traditional region of Lower Carniola in southeastern Slovenia, with Birčna Vas among the settlements along the way. The journey ends at Metlika, having traced a corridor from the Slovenian capital deep into the quieter landscape of the country's southeast.
