About this journey

Maribor station, erected in 1844 and modernised in 2021, stands at the northern end of one of Central Europe's oldest rail corridors. The Southern Railway reached Maribor from Graz in 1844, then extended south via Pragersko and Celje to Zidani Most, and on to Ljubljana by 1849 — a line that bound the Habsburg heartland to the Adriatic coast and has carried through traffic ever since.

The route follows lines in the Zidani Most – Šentilj and Dobova – Ljubljana corridor, operated today by Slovenian Railways (SŽ), the state railway company formed in 1991 after Yugoslavia's dissolution. The entire network runs on a 3 kV DC electrification system covering 610 km, a standard inherited from earlier Italian-administered lines and extended from 1962 onward. Train IC 517 carries the name 'Mura' on this pairing. The journey ends at Ljubljana station, whose building was completed on 18 April 1848 — a year before the railway itself arrived. Ljubljana sits at the intersection of Pan-European Corridors V and X, placing it at the centre of the SŽ network and on the axis linking Koper and Venice through Maribor toward Budapest.
