About this journey

Imeno station sits at the southern edge of the Slovenian rail network, in the traditional region of Styria within the Savinja Statistical Region. It is the last stop before the international border with Croatia, serving only regional trains on a line where faster services do not run. From here the route heads north toward Celje, following a corridor whose origins reach back to the Austrian Empire.

The railway through this part of Slovenia was built as the Südliche Staatsbahn — the Austrian Southern Railway — designed to link Vienna with the commercial port of Trieste. The line reached Celje in 1846, and Celje station, erected that same year, stands as one of Slovenia's oldest surviving railway stations. Slovenian Railways itself came into being in 1991, formed from the Ljubljana division of the former Yugoslav Railways after the dissolution of Yugoslavia, and today operates the network under a 3 kV DC electrification system. The journey from the quiet border halt at Imeno to the historic station at Celje covers, in under an hour, ground that was among the first in this region ever to carry a train.
