About this journey

Celje station, built in 1846 as part of the Austrian Empire's Southern Railway extension toward Trieste, sits on what was once one of the most strategically important trunk lines in Central Europe. That same year the main line opened through the town, connecting it to the broader Vienna–Trieste corridor via Pragersko and Zidani Most.

From Celje the journey turns onto the unelectrified branch toward Imeno — a line where only regional and local trains run, and which forms part of the historic Celje–Zagreb corridor. Slovenian Railways, established in 1991 from the former Yugoslav Railways' Ljubljana division, operates this branch on standard gauge, though unlike the 610 km of electrified main line running on a 3 kV DC system, the route to Imeno sees diesel traction only. The line follows the Sotla River valley toward the Slovenian–Croatian border, and Imeno station itself stands on the right bank of the Sotla as the last stop before that international crossing.
