About this journey

Most na Soči station sits not in the town itself but in the neighbouring settlement of Postaja, on the left bank of the Idrijca River — and the Bohinj Railway announces itself immediately. Just beyond the platform, a seven-arch viaduct carries the line across the Idrijca; it is the longest and largest structure along the entire route, and Austrian authorities once built a fortification beside it to protect the crossing. After the First World War that same fortification served the Italian army for housing and weapons storage, a reminder that this valley spent decades as a contested frontier.

Heading north-east, the line follows the Bohinj Railway toward the 6,327-metre Bohinj Tunnel — the longest railway tunnel in Slovenia. The village of Podbrdo, at the tunnel's southern portal in the narrow valley of the Bača River, carries its own layer of history: its station served as a formal border crossing between the Kingdom of Italy and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in the interwar period, and a monument there commemorates the workers who died building the tunnel. Beyond the tunnel, the route descends toward Bohinjska Bistrica, a station set in the Julian Alps in the Sava Bohinjka Valley, with Lake Bohinj at the western head of the valley. The journey moves from a river-gorge frontier landscape into an Alpine setting that feels markedly different from where it began.
