About this journey

Ljubljana railway station, whose current form dates to a renovation completed in 1980 by architect Marko Mušič, stands at the western edge of the Slovenian capital as the country's principal rail hub, handling domestic services alongside EuroCity connections to Vienna and Trieste. The station building itself predates the railway it serves: it was completed on 18 April 1848, a full year before the Austrian Southern Railway linking Vienna and Trieste reached the city.

The line the journey follows was built as part of that same Vienna–Trieste corridor, reaching Divača by 1857. From Ljubljana the route runs southwest, descending toward the Karst plateau. Divača station sits close to the Italian border and functions as a key junction: the 50-kilometre line to the Adriatic port of Koper diverges here, carrying substantial freight traffic. A new, shorter Koper–Divača alignment is under construction, reducing the route from 44 km to 27 km. The journey ends at Divača, where a line built for an imperial through-route across the nineteenth-century meets modern freight logistics — a contrast that marks the station's continued strategic importance to Slovenian rail.
