About this journey

Ljubljana railway station, completed on 18 April 1848, is one of the oldest railway hubs in the region — the Austrian Southern Railway from Vienna did not reach the city until 1849. From here, LP 3162 heads north-east on the Ljubljana Šiška – Kamnik Graben line, a single-track, local passenger service operated by Slovenian Railways (Slovenske železnice, SŽ), the state carrier formed in 1991 from the Ljubljana division of former Yugoslav Railways.

The route passes through Ljubljana Šiška, where it shares infrastructure with the Tarvisio–Ljubljana railway, opened on 14 December 1870 as part of the Austro-Hungarian Rudolfsbahn network and later nationalised in 1884 under the Imperial Royal Austrian State Railways. The line carries 3 kV DC electrification, a standard inherited from earlier Italian Ferrovie dello Stato practice. LP services — lokalni potniški, or local passenger trains — are the only category operating to Kamnik, running the full length of this quiet branch.

The journey ends at Kamnik, a town that served as the provincial capital of Carniola until 1256, when that role passed permanently to Ljubljana. The roughly 39-minute ride connects two places whose histories are bound together across centuries, the modern local train tracing a corridor between Slovenia's busy capital and the quieter market town it long ago superseded.
