Ljubljana railway station, completed on 18 April 1848, stands at the western end of one of Central Europe's oldest rail corridors. The Austrian Empire's Southern Railway reached Ljubljana by 1849, having already connected Maribor to the network in 1844 — a sequence that shaped the entire line the cab now follows northeast toward the Drava valley.

At Zidani Most, roughly mid-route, the single-track Sava river line branches away toward Zagreb, a junction that dates to 1862 and illustrates the layered history of this corridor. The Ljubljana–Maribor line forms part of Pan-European Corridor V, linking Koper through Ljubljana and Maribor toward Budapest, and runs on Slovenia's 3 kV DC electrification system — a standard inherited from earlier administration and now covering 610 km of the national network. On the double-track sections of this corridor, trains run on the left, a practice that sets Slovenian Railways apart from the rest of the former Yugoslav network. Maribor station itself was erected in 1844, making it one of the oldest stations on the route, and was upgraded in 2021. The journey moves from a capital station currently undergoing a 167-million-euro expansion to a terminus whose platform-level history stretches back to the very first years of steam in this part of Europe.
