About this journey

Zidani Most station sits close to the confluence of the Sava and Savinja Rivers, serving as the principal junction where services connecting eastern Slovenia with Ljubljana converge. From here the journey follows the Zidani Most–Šentilj line northward toward Maribor — a corridor whose origins reach back to the Habsburg era, when the state-owned k.k. Südliche Staatsbahn pushed steel rails through these river valleys to knit Vienna to the Adriatic.

Maribor was connected to Graz by rail in 1844, making it one of the earliest railway towns in what is now Slovenia, and the station that closes this journey was first erected that same year, receiving an upgrade in 2021. The Southern Railway Company later established its main workshop in the city, cementing Maribor's role as a centre of railway industry. After the First World War, the division of the Southern Railway placed the Austrian–Yugoslav border at Šentilj, the northern terminus of the line, a boundary that reshaped how this corridor was operated for decades. Today the double-track, electrified main line forms part of Pan-European Corridor V, linking Trieste and Koper through Ljubljana and Maribor toward Budapest.
