About this journey

Ljubljana railway station, completed on 18 April 1848, stands as one of the older termini in the region, predating by a year the Austrian Southern Railway's arrival in the city. At the time of filming, the station was approaching a major expansion — a project costing around 167 million euros and scheduled for completion in 2026 — that will deliver new track arrangements, covered platforms, and an extended underpass co-financed with European funds. The journey departs this station in transition and heads southeast on the line toward Novo Mesto.

The route passes through Lower Carniola, a traditional Slovenian region where the town of Trebnje sits on the Temenica River. The railway connecting Trebnje with Novo Mesto and Ljubljana opened in 1894, and the modern settlement of Trebnje grew up directly alongside it, reflecting how thoroughly the line shaped local development. A branch toward Sevnica was partially built by 1908, though the Krmelj section of that branch closed in 1996, leaving the main line to Novo Mesto as the enduring artery through this part of Slovenia. The SŽ series 713/715 unit covers the roughly ninety-minute run to Novo Mesto, passing from the Slovenian capital's urban surroundings into the quieter, river-valley landscape of Lower Carniola.
