About this journey

Divača station, which opened in 1857 on the main Ljubljana–Trieste railway line, serves as the starting point for the Divača–Koper Railway — a roughly 50-kilometre line descending from the Karst plateau to Slovenia's Adriatic coast. The line carries both passenger services and heavy freight traffic bound for the port of Koper, making it one of the more commercially significant short railways in the country.

From Divača the route passes through intermediate stations including Rodik, Hrpelje-Kozina, Presnica, and Črnotiče before reaching the coast. At the terminus, Koper station — a joint rail-and-bus facility built in 1979 — now operates under Slovenian Railways as state property managed by the Slovenian Infrastructure Agency. The journey on the existing alignment covers approximately 44 km of the line's route, a corridor that is itself under transformation: a new, shorter tunnelled alignment is slated to reduce the distance to 27 km when it opens, with completion targeted for 2026. The footage filmed in June 2022 therefore captures the older, winding route through the Karst while it remains in regular service.
