About this journey

Ljubljana railway station, where this journey begins, was completed on 18 April 1848, making it one of the older stations in the region — the Austrian Southern Railway connecting Vienna and Trieste would not reach Ljubljana until the following year. From here, train LP 4505 departs southward on the line toward Kočevje, passing through the traditional Lower Carniola landscape of southern Slovenia.

The route runs through the Municipality of Ribnica, passing just east of the small settlement of Gorenje Podpoljane, in a stretch that forms part of the Southeast Slovenia Statistical Region. The landscape through this section is rural, belonging to the broader Lower Carniola region that the line traverses for much of its length before reaching its terminus.

Kočevje, the southern end of the journey, sits at the foot of the Kočevski Rog karst plateau on the Rinža River. The town was first recorded in a 1363 deed, when it was known as Gottschee and had been established by German-speaking settlers from Carinthia and Tyrol at the invitation of the counts of Ortenburg. Northeast of the town centre, Lake Kočevje — a former open-pit coal mine — marks the area's more recent industrial past. The journey moves from a nineteenth-century urban terminus through quiet rural Lower Carniola to a town shaped by centuries of settlement and extraction.
