About this journey

Murska Sobota station sits in the flat Prekmurje region of northeastern Slovenia, close to the Mura River. The station carries particular historical weight: a Holocaust memorial unveiled on 29 January 2010 — the first of its kind in Slovenia — stands here, commemorating the deportation of Jews from the region. In 1919, Murska Sobota was declared the capital of the short-lived Republic of Prekmurje, a moment that reflects the turbulent cross-border history of this northeastern borderland.

The journey follows the Pragersko–Središče Railway, a line 51.888 kilometres long that is mostly single-tracked and non-electrified. It was opened on 24 April 1860 by the Southern Railway as part of the route from Kanizsa to Pragerhof — a project originally planned by the Emperor-Franz-Joseph Orient-Railway before that company merged with the Austrian Southern Railway Company in 1858. The 40.273-kilometre section between Pragersko and Ormož forms part of Pan-European Corridor V, running from Venice to Kyiv. The line ends at Pragersko station, a key junction connecting the main Ljubljana–Maribor line with the route toward Čakovec in Croatia, and currently undergoing upgrades. The contrast between the quiet, single-track passage through Prekmurje and the busy interchange awaiting at Pragersko defines the character of this run.
