About this journey

Ljubljana railway station, completed on 18 April 1848 before the Austrian Southern Railway even reached the city, is the starting point of a journey that crosses the Karst plateau and descends to the Adriatic coast. The station's long history has not spared it from change: an expansion project costing around 167 million euros, co-financed by European funds, began in autumn 2024 and is planned for completion in 2026.

From Ljubljana the route follows the line toward Sežana before branching onto the Divača–Koper Railway, an approximately 50-kilometre line that links the interior with the port of Koper. Intermediate stops include Divača, Hrpelje-Kozina, and Prešnica, and the line carries substantial freight traffic alongside passenger services — a reflection of Koper's role as a working port. A new, shorter alignment is under construction that will reduce the Divača–Koper section from 44 km to 27 km through a series of tunnels, with opening planned for 2026. Koper station itself, a joint rail and bus facility built in 1979, marks the end of the run — a terminus that pairs a modest, functional building with the industrial scale of the port beyond.
