Ljubljana to Trieste Cab Ride
Watch on YouTubeAbout this journey
Ljubljana station, completed in 1848, stands at the heart of a corridor that the Austrian Southern Railway extended to the city in 1849 as part of its Vienna–Trieste main axis. From that platform, EC134 heads south-west along the Ljubljana–Sežana line toward the Karst plateau and the Italian border, before continuing over the Ferrovia Meridionale and the coastal stretch into Trieste.
The railway infrastructure carrying this journey took shape across several decades of Habsburg engineering. The line out of Ljubljana opened on 14 December 1870, built by the Imperial and Royal privileged Crown Prince Rudolf Railway company and nationalised in 1884 after a financial crisis, when the Imperial Royal Austrian State Railways took over operations. The 3 kV DC electrification that still defines the Slovenian section dates from that same era of successive modernisation. At the far end, Trieste Centrale's Neo-Renaissance passenger building — featuring a monumental Royal Hall and a glass train hall — was inaugurated on 19 June 1878 on land reclaimed from the sea, and its nine terminating tracks across five platforms remain the end point of this journey today. The route thus traces a corridor assembled piece by piece across the nineteenth century, arriving at a terminus whose architecture still reflects the imperial ambition that first brought the railway to the Adriatic shore.
