About this journey

Ogulin station sits at 323 m above sea level in a wide karst valley shaped by the Dobra and Zagorska Mrežnica rivers, on the boundary between Gorski Kotar, Lika, Kordun and Gornje Pokuplje. The station marks a practical boundary on line M202: electrification ends here, so long-distance trains continuing southward must exchange their electric locomotive for a diesel one before proceeding. The Ogulin karst plain itself covers 60 km² and is overlooked to the west by the Velika Kapela massif, whose peak Klek rises to 1,181 m.

Line M202 — Zagreb Glavni kolodvor–Karlovac–Rijeka — has its roots in the 1873 opening of a continuous Budapest–Rijeka railway, which brought rapid growth in traffic converging on Zagreb. A direct rail connection toward Karlovac was incorporated into the 1890s station-building programme, removing the need for Rijeka-bound services to route through Zagreb South Station. The journey ends at Karlovac, a city 130 km northeast of Rijeka and 56 km southwest of Zagreb. Karlovac had thrived as a trade and transport hub before the 1861 opening of the Zidani Most–Zagreb–Sisak railway shifted commerce away from the river-and-road network the city depended on — a transition that railway travel through here still quietly reflects.
