About this journey

Paraná station stands at the western end of a line with a layered colonial and national history. The route east toward Enrique Berduc runs on track first laid as part of the Central Entre Ríos Railway, completed in 1887. That company was absorbed by the British-owned Entre Ríos Railway in 1892, and the line passed through successive ownerships until Argentina's railway nationalisation in 1948 brought it under the Ferrocarril General Urquiza — a network named after the Argentine general and politician Justo José de Urquiza.

The FC Urquiza is notable for operating on 1,435 mm standard gauge, setting it apart from the 1,676 mm broad gauge used by most other Argentine interurban railways. Today the service is operated by the state-owned Trenes Argentinos using Materfer rolling stock — the same fleet seen throughout the Paraná commuter network, which runs six times a day on weekdays. The journey to Enrique Berduc aboard the MATERFER CMM 400-2 offers a quiet passage through a corridor that was once part of an ambitious network connecting Buenos Aires to the northern provinces, now reduced to a modest but functioning local service subsidised for the communities it serves.
