About this journey

The journey departs from Alta Córdoba station, the historic terminus in the northern barrio of Córdoba city, and follows the Ramal A1 of the Ferrocarril General Belgrano into the Punilla Valley. The station was originally built by the Córdoba Central Railway, which opened its first section in 1888. In 1938 the company passed to the Argentine state, and when Juan Perón nationalised the country's railways in 1948 the line was folded into the General Belgrano Railway. By the 1960s the route carried large numbers of passengers from the Valle de Punilla and tourists arriving from Córdoba, Rosario, and Buenos Aires, but the line was closed in 1977. A private concession later branded it Tren de las Sierras, operating up to 100 km toward Capilla del Monte before services collapsed in 2001. State-owned Trenes Argentinos took the service over in September 2013, and Alta Córdoba was re-established as the terminus in March 2015.

The train runs aboard an EMEPA ALERCE unit, heading northwest through Córdoba Province toward the Punilla Valley — a corridor whose scenic towns, among them Villa Carlos Paz and Cosquín, have drawn visitors for generations. The journey ends at Cosquín station, a town known across Argentina as the home of the Cosquín National Folk Music Festival, offering a destination that reflects the leisure character this railway has carried since its golden age.
